FU Festival steps

Description

I thought this time i'd post a step by step of my recent deviation for a change. Although there is only three images and a lot was involved, i think that these show the biggest steps in the piece.

From left to right -

Step one - The first image is from the original scan of the sketch I did, at first i thought the title of the festival was "Metal vs Punk" and i started drawing the metaller at the top and the punk at the bottom, and i was happy with how they came out. But after realising that it is actually called "Punk vs Metal" it was only a simple matter of swapping the heads when i scanned the image. So in the orignal sketch, the punks head is down the bottom with long hair seemingly coming from nowhere behind him, whilst giving the sign of the devil in arms wearing a leather jacket, and the metaller is up the top with the bare arms giving the fingers (btw for american, we use the one middle finger to "flip some one off" as you put it, but we mostly use the two fingers). This is why when you look at the metallers hair on the first step it looks odd to how the hole ring is shaped.

Step two - One the sketch was scanned and all things fixed, i applied the colour. I wanted the logo to feel solid, like a coat of arms or old mural, so making it appear as if made from stone gives off the impression that it is. A cold grey with a tint of blue was applied, and i simply used different tones of this for shading and highlights. Once that was done, I then went about with the smudge tool and rendered is smooth, also using the burn and dodge tool where needed (the part that probably took the most time was the chains as there is quite a bit of detail gone into that section). After this was done, i discarded the sketch which was on the top layer with the layer option set to multiply.

Step three -The last thing was bringing out the image more and giving it a much more stone texture. I made two rings of the same colour as the image, cut them in half horzontally and simply fiddled with the layer options till i found one that highlighted what was underneath (the light sorce coming from above, so the top of the ring and the inner part of the lower end of the ring) and one that darkened what was underneath (the bottom of the upper part of the ring and the very bottom of the ring), then i used the eraser with a soft brush to remove the areas where the highlight and shade meet along the sides, so it gives the impression that it blends in. The stone texture was probably the most simple part of the whole piece, as i just went on google and typed "granite" as granite is a nice stone texture. I pasted the image on top, resized it, set the layer to multiply and then just adjust the opacity till i got my desired effect. The backround was just an enlarged section of one of the filter effects under the "texture" section called "Craquelure". With the text i just added an emboss effect to is and burned certain areas. And lastly to complete the image i added a heavy shadow behind the logo and on the edges.

And thus this is how the skeats did it, not so hard now once you know what you are doing ;)
